Go For A Walk

Sometimes in therapy, we spend a lot of time trying to understand why we feel the way we feel. That matters. But there’s times when the best thing to do is stop thinking and go for a walk.

Walking gives us a little distance. From the argument. From the problem. From the version of the story you've been telling yourself. Your body is moving, your surroundings are changing, and your mind has a little room to work. You might notice something you couldn't see while sitting still. Maggie Rogers sings in Alaska, “And I walked off you, And I walked off the old me.” There’s something true in that. Sometimes a pathway towards change is physically stepping away from what’s stuck.

Therapy isn't always about finding the perfect insight. Sometimes it's about giving yourself space. A walk can be part of that. You may come back to the same problem and see it differently. You may realize what you actually want. Or you may just feel a little less trapped. Go for a walk and see what happens.
